Research

The Laboratory Animal Centre (LAC) of International Campus, which is affiliated with ZJU-UoE Institute (ZJE), is located on the lower ground floor of ZJE Building, with a total floor area of 1,492 m2 and a designed capacity of approximately 8,000 individually ventilated cages (IVCs) for housing wild-type and genetically engineered mice and rats. The LAC comprises experimental, rederivation, breeding, and housing areas, catering to the needs of life scientific research and education programmes on campus.

The construction and operation of LAC strictly adheres to national and local laws, regulations, and standards concerning laboratory animals. The LAC has established a set of rules and regulations, as well as SOPs for animal husbandry management, and has obtained the Laboratory Animal Use License. The LAC implements delicacy management practices in aspects such as personnel and item access, animal hygiene, environmental disinfection, disease prevention and control, animal housing, and carcass disposal, thus meeting user needs for laboratory animal husbandry and training for animal experimentation. As the main body of the Sino-UK cooperative education institution, the LAC ensures the quality and safety of laboratory animals. The LAC follows ethical and welfare standards in both China and the UK, and promotes humane care and use that meet animal welfare requirements by providing professional laboratory animal technical support and training to researchers. The barrier facilities of the LAC are equipped with automated and intelligent monitoring systems, which conduct online monitoring of parameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure differentials, purified water, purified air, supply air, exhaust air, lighting, and ultraviolet lamps. It is also furnished with intelligent access control and security systems to ensure the stable living environment of laboratory animals, provide animals with humane care, and prioritize animal welfare, thereby safeguarding the stability, accuracy, and scientific validity of animal experiments.

The LAC owns an experienced and well-structured professional team, consisting of a director, production supervisor, veterinarian, technician, administrative assistant, animal care takers, as well as a professional facilities maintenance team. The management personnel all hold doctoral or master's degrees in laboratory animal science or related fields. The LAC provide high-level animal experimental services to research personnel, including rederivation, breeding, housing, genotyping, veterinary daily care, quarantine for animals from designated suppliers, pathogenic microorganism testing, and basic experimental technical services (including but not limited to intraperitoneal injection, gavage, mouse tagging, tail vein injection, blood collection, and mouse dissection). The LAC continually strengthens its public service capabilities, enhances service quality and capacity, with the aim of making contributions to the institute's sustained and rapid development.

In the future, the LAC will continue to focus on its facilities and equipment, talent development, technical expertise, and management proficiency. It is committed to building an integrated public technical service support platform of laboratory animal and complex with internationally advanced standards, encompassing laboratory animal housing management, animal experimental technical services, teaching and training of animal experimentation, breeding and basic research, supporting the advancement of life sciences and the interdisciplinary studies at Zhejiang University towards international excellence and making significant contributions to society.
