In 1881, David Duncan Main, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh (UoE) came to Hangzhou and became the head of Guangji Hospital (the predecessor of The second affiliated hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine). 138 years later, alumni of David Duncan Main, visitors from the University of Edinburgh returned to the hospital.

On March 5th, the delegation from the University of Edinburgh visited The second affiliated hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU) in Hangzhou. Members of the delegation were Vice-Principal and head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Professor Moira Whyte, Dean of BMS Professor Mike Shipston, College Register from College of Medicine and Veterinary Dr Catherine Elliott, Deputy head of Infection Medicine Dr Till T. Bachmann and Dean of ZJU-UoE Institute Professor Hongwei Ouyang. Dean of SAHZU Jianan Wang, Secretary of SAHZU Zhengying Chen, Executive Vice Dean of SAHZU Weilin Wang, Vice Secretary of SAHZU Meixiang Xiang, Vice Dean of SAHZU Jian Huang, Vice Dean of SAHZU Zhiying Wu, Director of International Exchange office Mingli Yang warmly welcomed the delegation.

Dean of SAHZU Jianan Wang gave an opening speech where he welcomed all the guests and introduced basic information and development planning of SAHZU. Professor Moira Whyte introduced the development and discipline advantages of College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine in UoE. Then, the two sides discussed the fields and future ideas of cooperation, such as joint research center, joint training of postgraduates, joint construction of teaching resources and academic exchanges, and reached preliminary consensus. After the meeting, the delegation visited the cardiac intervention center, clinical research center, biobank and biotherapy center of SAHZU, all the delegation members noted the medical strength and profound cultural deposits of SAHZU.

UoE and SAHZU share a beautiful historical friendship, we believe that this visiting will be a new start for the collaboration between UoE and SAHZU.
