On 26th April, two postdoctoral fellows from our institute successfully secured a 2 year research grant from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
Dr. Wei Wei was awarded a grant on the project, “Study of Molecular Self-assembling hydrogel for joint surface cartilage repair”. The aim of the project is to develop novel biomaterials to help repair cartilage defects for osteoarthritis patients. Dr. Wei graduated from Nanjing University of Science and Technology with a PhD in Chemical Engineering and Technology. His ongoing interest is to develop hydrogels for cartilage defects repair and regeneration.
Dr. Belinda Wei-Ching Loh was awarded a grant on the project, “Elucidating the multi-functional role of Membrane-embedded molecular motors”. The aim of the project is to study the protein complex responsible for the assembly of filamentous bacteriophages when released from its host. This work will help in the development of viral based treatments to combat pathogenic bacterial infections. Dr. Loh completed her PhD in Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, Germany. Her ongoing interests are to study protein complexes associated to membrane proteins to understand how they function mechanistically.
