Title:  Protein Targeting and Eukaryogenesis

Speaker: Dr Cory Dunn

Since eukaryotes are highly compartmentalized, it is worthwhile to consider the mechanisms by which novel polypeptides and proteins transferred from other organisms reach diverse organellar destinations and promote fitness. I will discuss our application of deep mutational scanning toward the understanding of how proteins are targeted to the mitochondrial outer membrane. Furthermore, I will consider the degeneracy of organelle targeting sequences, and why inefficient or flexible targeting of proteins to organelles is a 'feature,' rather than a 'bug' of eukaryotic cells. Finally, I will discuss the possibility that heat generation was the first function of the proto-mitochondrial symbiont within the eukaryotic lineage.
