On the afternoon of July 1, 2024, the 116th session of the Biomed-X Seminar, hosted by the Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute, was successfully held in 2A-305, International Campus. Invited by Dr. Di Chen, Professor Jun Wu from the Southwestern Medical Center at the University of Texas presented an academic report titled "Stem Cells and Interspecies Organogenesis."
Professor Wu initially introduced the mechanisms underlying xenogeneic organogenesis and its promising research prospects. Leveraging blastocyst complementation across species, Professor Wu and his team have achieved the cultivation of organs from one species within a host animal of another species, offering significant potential to alleviate the global shortage of organ supply.
Professor Wu and his team have identified three strategies to significantly enhance the chimerism rate of human embryonic stem cells. Their research findings have significantly advanced the field of xenogeneic organ regeneration, providing crucial theoretical guidance for the in vitro cultivation of human organs in xenogeneic hosts and making substantial contributions to addressing the organ supply shortage.
During the event, faculty and students actively engaged in discussions, demonstrating their open-minded approach to academic exploration and critical thinking about research questions. Professor Wu patiently and thoroughly answered every question, deepening the understanding and insights of participants in this field.
As the 116th session of the Biomed-X Seminar series, this report underscores the institute's commitment to fostering high-level academic exchanges through its academic brand building efforts. The institute will continue to provide a platform for faculty and students to engage in cutting-edge scientific discussions.
