On the afternoon of October 15, 2026, the 155th session of the Biomed‑X Research Seminar of ZJE was successfully held in Room 2A-203, ZJE Building. Prof. Andrea Caporali from the University of Edinburgh delivered an academic report entitled “From omics to function: Identifying microRNA mechanisms in vascular disease and revascularization”. ZJE Yanyan Cai hosted this lecture.

Professor Caporali described how ischaemia‑driven hypoxia, immune responses and haemodynamic shifts enable endothelial cells to reconstruct functional blood‑vessel networks, which depend on cell‑to‑cell signalling within vessel walls. Breakdown of such signalling disturbs vascular balance and worsens vascular diseases. As promising molecular targets, microRNAs are difficult to screen specifically. Using transcriptomics, loss‑of‑function assays and pre‑clinical imaging, his group validated key miRNAs and uncovered their roles in ischaemia‑triggered revascularization and vascular disease control.

Faculty and students engaged in fruitful discussions with Professor Caporali, demonstrating open academic spirit and critical scientific thinking. Professor Caporali provided thorough answers to every question, and his rigorous scientific approach brought valuable insights to all participants.

This is the 155th session of the Biomed-X Seminar series. ZJE will continue to build this academic brand and provide a high-level academic exchange platform for teachers and students.
